Why is reading important?

Learning to read is a vital skill as it enhances our knowledge and understanding of the world around us!

Being a strong reader gives children access to new information, enhances their communication skills and develops their imagination.

What are the Reading SATs?

The SATs are national assessments that Year 6 pupils sit in May.

The Reading SATs assess each child's ability to read and comprehend a range of texts (usually fiction, non-fiction and poetry).

Children have 1 hour to read and answer questions on three texts. Questions focus on children's ability to retrieve information, infer, understand vocabulary, summarise, explain language choices and compare.

To pass, pupils need to achieve a scaled score of 100. The paper has a total of 50 marks and, each year, the number of marks needed by a pupil to be awarded a scaled score of 100 changes. In recent years, pupils have needed between 24 - 29 marks to pass.
