What is phonics?

Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read by focusing on the sounds that letters make. It helps children learn to connect the sounds they hear in words with the letters that represent those sounds.

This method makes it easier for children to figure out how to read and spell words.

What is the Phonics Screening Check?

The Phonics Screening Check is a national assessment that Year 1 pupils sit in June.

The check assesses a child's ability to read real and made-up words.

Children can get up to 40 marks on this test and they must be awarded 32 marks to pass.
